Salina Narendra grew up in a small town in a family that has endured hardships but is stuck together. He saw the value of loyalty, love, and perseverance.
Narendra has embraced those values in her job as a licensed practical nurse at the Good Samaritan Society – Fargo, and she looks forward to maintaining them as she progresses in her career.
That career got a boost recently when he was nominated as the winner of the Sanford Health Equity Scholarship. As a North Dakota State University student pursuing a bachelor's degree in nursing, the news of a $ 5,000 scholarship has been welcomed.
Narendra said, “I did not have all the money I needed to go to school so I was applying for various scholarships. “I hoped a lot of people would apply for it because it's so big, but I thought I'd give it a try. It made me and my family really happy. “
The Sanford Health Equity in Education Scholarship is a targeted financial scholarship program that is offered in search of higher education and helps the traditionally underprivileged.
Recipients of the award must demonstrate exceptional character and leadership in their own advancement and in enriching the lives of others, especially in the service and the involvement and influence of educators and communities.
For Narendra, his first exposure to nursing while at Warroad High School in Minnesota was as a certified nursing assistant. She has worked in a long-term care position and has been able to get to know and love the residents and the work she is doing.
Eventually it became an LPN and landed a job with the Good Samaritan Society in Fargo, where she now works as well as continuing her education.
“I learned a lot that I didn’t learn in school,” he said. “I have learned a lot about the aspects of nursing paperwork but I am still going to practice my nursing skills. I think everyone is very helpful and comfortable because as a new grad, there are definitely some adjustments. “
Narendra grew up in Warroad with two sisters, his father and his grandmother, and they lived close by. “We lean on each other,” is how he puts it. In the current context it has made him sensitive to the social environment in which he works in the Good Samaritan Society and the support they have given him to support his career.
“They have encouraged me to learn and take my education further,” said Narendra. “They have been very helpful in guiding me towards what I want to do in the future.”
