Right-Wing Trolls Are Trying to Break Back Into Twitter

Within two hours Twitter announced that they had accepted Elon Musk’s $ 44 billion offer to buy the company and privatize it. Related to the first symptoms Flash across Joe Mulhall’s screen. Mulhol Hope is the director of research at Not Hate, an anti-British and anti-fascist group that campaigns against bigotry.

When Musk announced his purchase of Twitter, he said that “freedom of speech is the foundation of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where important issues for the future of humanity are debated.” Opposition political activists Tommy Robinson and Britain First have banned far-right individuals and groups, including a fascist political party. In the United States, other neo-Nazis who were previously banned from the platform Set up a new account On Twitter.

Accounts were reported on Twitter by Mulhall, Hope Not Hate and others, and were subsequently banned before they could set foot. While some are concerned that it could signal a resurgence of previously banned people from Twitter to spread hatred and conflict, Mask should follow through with a promise to relax the rules on what kind of posts are allowed.

The effects of the wave have already begun. On Monday, Christopher Bauji, founder of Bot Sentinel, a service that tracks unverified behavior on Twitter, noticed that a number of left-leaning accounts had already complained about losing followers. Bauji noticed that he lost 400 of his 77,000-odd followers. At first, he didn’t think it was a big deal: people regularly churned out about who to follow.

Bot Sentinel is updated at midnight Eastern time. When Bauji looks at the data at 7 a.m., it becomes clear that something more significant is happening. On a typical day, an average of about 750 of its 2.5 million samples are either deactivated or suspended.

The results at the end of April 25 were significantly different – 5,132 accounts across the political spectrum were deactivated and 341 more suspended. Other indicators also looked strange. “We’re seeing a significant increase in right-wing accounts that are starting to follow these other accounts,” Bauji said. “It could be a bat signal where they feel safe coming back to Twitter, or it could be something else.”

Manuel Ribeiro, who studies platform migration at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne Alt-Wright, called it “replatforming”. “If Twitter adopts a free speech absolutist philosophy, it could very well be that decisions regarding hate speech or persuasion for harm would be reversed, restoring popular ultra-right accounts,” he said.

The problem is not limited to the United States. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has more than ten times his followers in the last two days compared to his previous average, while Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lost followers on April 26, in contrast to the average daily gain. “It doesn’t make sense,” Bouzy said. “I don’t understand why the acquisition of Mask Twitter will have an impact on Brazilian politics.” Twitter has confirmed The increase in account activity that NBC News had was not automatic and it was organic churning that could be linked to the capture of the mask platform.
