Gahanna launches food-waste composting partnership with GoZERO, SWACO

Thanks to a new food-waste program launched by the city on April 25 in partnership with GoZERO and the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio, Gahanna residents have a new way to compost food scrap.

The program allows registered participants to collect food waste in a compostable bin for dumping in a community compost at Friendship Park, 150 Oklahoma Avenue.

Participation in the Gahanna program is free, but must be registered at gahanna.gov/refuse-recycling-and-yard-waste.

The scraps will be collected by GoZERO and used to create healthy soil and increase nutritious food instead of sending nutrients to landfills.

A GoZERO worker performs a raw dump at a former facility in London.

Other central Ohio communities using residential compost drop-off programs include Dublin, Grove City, Hilliard, New Albany, Upper Arlington, Westerville and Worthington, said Gojoro Sales and Services’ Jamison Thornton.

“We are currently collecting 100 tons of material monthly from diverse customers, such as restaurants, schools and colleges, manufacturing facilities and business offices,” Thornton said.

Miranda Volmar, director of Gahanna Administrative Services, says this first year of the composting initiative is being funded by a reciprocal grant from SWACO to the city. He said the total grant request was $ 9,828 and included a 25% match.
