Fortnite is one of the most successful games in the world today, and is actively played by millions of players. It is already available across almost the entire range of modern gaming platforms, but it can be difficult to access on mobile devices. On Thursday, Xbox and Epic Games announced a new partnership that makes playing Fortnite easier, no matter where you are.
As of today, Fortnite is now available for play via Microsoft's Xbox Cloud Gaming. The service gives Xbox Game Pass Ultimate customers access to a huge collection of Xbox titles through the power of the cloud and is available across Xbox, Windows PC, Android, iOS and more through a browser or app. With the addition of a free-to-play title like Fortnite, Xbox is changing things and setting a new precedent.
You don't have to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to play Fortnite with Xbox Cloud Gaming. All you need is a Microsoft account (you can create an account for free, if you don't already have one), which you can use to sign in to xbox.com/play on any supported, browser-enabled device. You are able to play completely free Fortnite using either touch control or a compatible Bluetooth controller.
Significantly, this means that Fortnite is again available on iOS devices, unless you want to stream it to the Internet. Available on iPhones and iPads via the Xbox Cloud Gaming Browser, as well as Android and Windows PCs, the Fortnite ban on Apple devices is half-finished. To stream Fortnite you'll need a comparatively capable internet, which is already an intense online-connected game, but you now have that option.
For a small subset of users, this could mean that Fortnite can now be played on Steam, where it is not officially supported. The Xbox doesn't explicitly mention Fortnite on Valve's handheld consoles, but the Xbox Cloud Gaming Steam is available in “test” capabilities. Players can access the streaming service through the browser and play the entire Xbox Cloud gaming catalog from their Steam deck.
Fortnite is the first free-to-play title that Microsoft has added to the Xbox Cloud gaming catalog, and it apparently won't end there. The company is looking to add other popular free-to-play titles in the future, which will further enhance the value of Xbox Cloud gaming for gaming in the meantime. Xbox Cloud Gaming already has a lot of great games, but the intention seems to be to expand that pool to new areas, starting with the addition of Xbox Fortnite.
