⚡ Good morning! Hey, it’s Friday! Big news.

Laptop in glass?

Lenovo is gone and has done a job. It’s glass placed on the outer shell of a laptop.

  • Since smartphones have become slippery all-glass devices, there are a few options, and most people use a case anyway (although there are exceptions!)
  • However, it is possible that Lenovo has now started something that makes laptops even worse.

Lenovo’s new laptop:

  • A bunch of new Lenovo laptops were announced yesterday, including some standouts of the 14.5-inch Slim 7i Pro X and Slim 7 Pro X.
  • They have some BFI CPUs and decent GPUs and claim 12.5 to 15.5-hour battery life.
  • And they look good, no problem.
  • But there’s also a new Lenovo Slim 9i, with a fancy 14-inch OLED touchscreen and … a glass lid.
  • (For its price, the Slim 9i is basically a convertible 9i laptop without a replaceable hinge part. And outside the United States, it’s known as the Yoga Slim 9i.)

Glass shell:

  • The unusual thing about the Slim 9i, which is different from other Lenovo laptops, is that it has a lid covered in glass.
  • Lenovo calls it a “3D glass cover”, which means nothing since all glass lives in our three-dimensional world, but hey.
  • Sites that saw it at a pre-launch event have, unfortunately, called it a premium look and feel, although it has been widely mentioned that it easily attracts fingerprints.
  • But keep my laptop away from glass! No!
  • The introduction of glass is the introduction of a compromise.
  • Laptops aren’t thrown away like phones, but they’re packed in bags, carried around, tinkered with … and bends and flexes aren’t exactly the best thing for glass.
  • The idea of cracking stressed edges, or spider webs, or just broken glass in a laptop sounds awful.
  • And if it starts to signal the end of a solid metal shell, with all its protection, for something that “looks smooth”, it sounds like bad news.
  • I don’t say glass.

Friday fun

European space agency you need! To help find the differences in this photo(Gizmodo).

  • In a nutshell: The Rosetta spacecraft, first met with a comet, collected a lot of information about the comet 67P / Churyumov-Gerasimenko and took a lot of pictures.
  • But the human eye is needed to figure out what has changed in certain images due to the algorithm struggle.
  • It is up to us to decipher it. Civil science, aha!
  • You can check it out at Rosetta Zoo: here’s a tutorial and everything – it looks pretty good but it’s hard to figure out how to use it. You just have to be more discriminating with the help you render toward other people. Good luck!

Bonus fun: Would you say wow?
